In the heart of Brasília, where economic decisions and financial flows circulate, there are stories that rarely gain visibility. Faces was born from this contrast.

They are men and women, cis and trans, who share a common experience: using a communal restroom that, more than a basic service, has become a space for care, connection, and the rebuilding of dignity.

“I used to do sex work, because in the world of trans women and travestis, that’s the option we have to survive. I come from a time when we had to work on the streets, and on the streets we dealt with all kinds of people, all kinds of clients.”

“We don’t get any rest. Because I don’t have a bed, man. That wears you down. You know what we miss? Silence. There are so many bars, with music—at night, during the day—so much noise, shouting. I go stay with family, because being at a relative’s place doesn’t really work, you know. Wow. I feel like I’m a burden, even though I’m their brother.”

“‘Rat Hole.’ It’s like saying that inside this space there are no human beings—only sick people, only rats. And that’s not true. Because it’s a place where there’s joy, where there are people, where there’s life.”

“With a restroom here in the Setor Comercial Sul, it’s used both by people experiencing homelessness and by relatives and patients from the Base Hospital, who also come here to shower and use the facilities. And for those living on the streets, it’s a real help—they can bathe and get themselves together.”

“I lost my job during the pandemic and came here at the time. I have a wonderful wife and a daughter. And when I lost my job, I didn’t want to go back home. I came here, to the Setor Comercial, and met Seu Zé, who stays right up front.”

Seu Zé

“But I’ve never been arrested, I’ve never stolen. My name—thank God—my record, anyone can check it, it’s clean. I take pride in who I am. A lot of people have prejudice against Black people, but I’m not just anyone. I’m someone who likes to keep things straight, who doesn’t like asking anything from anyone. That’s who I am. I’m sincere. That’s why I say this is my home. This is my place.”

“I used to think about my family, and I would ask God, when I was very young, ‘God, am I going to die here?’ I started rebelling really early—around eight years old. But now that I’ve discovered another side of life, in the sense that God is in charge of everything, I’m working in the restroom at the Setor, at the institute No Setor.”

“There’s ‘homeless people’ and there’s ‘being in a situation of homelessness.’ They’re different. Some weren’t before—like me—but now I am. We had a meeting this week, people living on the streets versus business owners. At first they thought we were bad—and some still do. So they want to ‘clean it up.’ But what we want is dignity. You can’t demonize people living on the streets, as if they were demons.”

“I began to realize that many of these people—those with a lot of financial means—carry a kind of poverty we don’t have, you know? A poverty of true friendship, of finding joy in the simplest things—a plate of food, freedom. Many of them live confined in their condos, taking medication, drinking whisky, getting intoxicated, using drugs.”
