In the heart of Brasília, where economic decisions and financial flows circulate, there are stories that rarely gain visibility. Faces is born from this contrast. A project about people who live (or have lived) in vulnerable situations in the city's South Commercial Sector.

They are men, women, and transgender people who share a common experience: the use of a communal bathroom that, more than a basic service, has become a space for welcoming, coexistence, and the rebuilding of dignity.

"I used to do sex work because, in the world of trans people and travestis, that’s the option we have to survive. I come from a time when we had to work on the streets, and on the streets we dealt with all kinds of people, all kinds of clients."

"We don’t get any rest. Because I don’t even have a bed, man. That wears you down. You know what we miss? Silence. There are so many bars, music blasting, day and night, constant noise, people shouting. I go stay with family, but it doesn’t really work at their place. I feel like I’m bothering them, even though I’m their brother."

"‘Rat hole.’ It’s like saying that inside this space there are no human beings. That there are sick people, that there are rats. But that’s not it. Because it’s a place where there’s joy, where there are people — there’s life."

"With this bathroom here in the Setor Comercial Sul, not only people experiencing homelessness use it, but also relatives and patients from the Base Hospital come here to shower and use the facilities. And for people living on the streets, it’s a huge help, because they can take a shower and get themselves ready."

"I lost my job during the pandemic and came here at that time. I have a wonderful wife and a daughter. And when I lost my job, I didn’t want to go back home. I came here to the Setor Comercial and met Seu Zé, who stays right up front."

"But I’ve never been arrested, I’ve never stolen. My name—thank God—my record, anyone can look it up, it’s clean. I take pride in who I am. A lot of people still have prejudice against Black people, but I’m not just anyone. I’m someone who likes to keep things right, I don’t like asking anyone for anything. That’s the kind of person I am. I’m straightforward. That’s why I say this place is my home. This is where I belong."

"I used to think about my family, and I would ask God, when I was really young, ‘God, am I going to die here?’ I started rebelling very early, you know? I was around eight years old. But now, after discovering the other side of life—understanding that God is the owner of everything—I’m working at the bathroom in the Setor, at the No Setor institute."

"There’s a difference between being a homeless person and being in a situation of homelessness. They’re not the same. Some people weren’t always like this—like me, for example, I am now. We had a meeting this week, people experiencing homelessness and business owners. At first, they saw us as something bad—and many still do. So they want to ‘clean us out.’ What we want is dignity. You can’t demonize people living on the streets, because they’re not demons."

"I started to realize that many of those people who have a lot of money—most of them, actually—have a kind of poverty that we don’t have, you know? A poverty of true friendship, of finding joy in the simplest things, like a meal, like freedom. Many of them live trapped in their gated communities, taking medication, drinking whisky, getting drunk, using drugs."
